My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

I've got a 1.5 year old Syrian hamster called Sally. She's had a brill life, with me and my family always treating and petting her, and she's never had any health problems.

But now I know that she's getting old, but she's been acting really strangley:

*Drinking really slowly.

*Hoarding less.

*Staying motionless for around 5minutes, then run around her cage, turning her head as if she's using the sides of her cage and her toys as scratching posts.

*The roots of her hair -some whole hairs- are dark grey.

*Trying to escape more and more often[3+ times a day at the moment]

*Crouching small when you hold her.

*Pink and bald patches are behind her ears.

*Her whole coat is thinning, especially above her eyes.

*Deliberatly going to the highest points of her cage and letting herself drop, over and over again-She does that for hours.

*Tries to nip you when you try to stop her doing something.

Please give me some advice on how to deal with it, or how to stop her!!

Thanks, Em

At 2 years they usually expire. Continue to do everything you have been doing, it sounds like you have provided her with a great life.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

Sounds like the getting time for the big hampster wheel in the sky

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

mINE DID THAT TOO, THEN SHE DIES, SRY

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

You'd better start making funeral arrangements, and say your final goodbyes

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

That's almost as if it sounds like the hamster wants to commit suicide...lol. Sorry. Hopefully it's just normal.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

I don't think you can stop her.Just let her be unless she is in pain then I think you know what you have to do.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

well i am sorry to hear about your hampster i have one too so i know how you mit feel. but you could try to take her to the vet that might be your best bet.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

What exactly is a brill life? The only reference I can find to "brill" in a dictionary describes an edible flat fish.

Here's some info. I found on the internet about hampsters...

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

it's pretty normaly for older pets to get "grey hairs"...like humans do! my dog use to be a really pretty black and whie, now the black is spoted with white hairs everywhere. as for the thining of hair....due to age to. niping might be her just getting more grumpy as she gest older or not really wanted to be touched as much. as someone elses noted hamseters/mice/gerbils only live for about 2 years. i would say just keep her as happy and content as you can and treasure what time you may have left.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

My little brothers hamster is almost 3 so i dont think its because of her age. his also had bald patches but we took it to the vet and they fixed the patches and itchiness. As for trying to escape all hamsters try that two of mines have been successful and i haven't seen them since lol. Also lots of hamsters climb to the high point of the cage it gives them something to do try putting it in a ball once in a while. But i think you should definitely take her to the vets and get some answers there.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

Old age and possibly some kind of infection or nervous condition.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

hamsters do crazy things she bites you because your hands in her way trust me all animals do it

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

brill means brilliant for those who can't read abbreviations, and yes she is getting older now and may have a neurological problem, they develop things as they age like we do., if you start to get really worried, ie won't eat etc, take her to the vet if you can and see what they say. and hair does turn graey as they age, hair will fade out, the only thing i don't get is the going to high places and dropping, that almost sounds like a neurological problem. maybe call a vet.

If she seems to be scratching a lot are you sure she doesnt have any fleas or mites. This can cause scratching and lethargy. They drink blood and when such a small animals is infested, it can cause them to become anemic. As she is older she might have arthritis and be nippy because she is stiff and sore. Maybe something natural like 5 mg glucosamine will help relieve the inflammation. the pills are rarely in this low dose, so you will have to estimate how much is 5 mg. Cant hurt if everyone thinks she is on her way out. Search engine arthritis relieving fruits and veggies. Offer her some daily or antiinflamatory veggies. Cant hurt. I has a Srian hamster live to be nearly 3.5 and used holistic and natural cures on her when she was down. Does she have a wheel? Might help her not to try offing herself. You might try changing her cage some too. Maybe a little hammock for her or a new bed. Little things mean a lot. I change my rat cages around so they dont get bored. -Shaylee

Has anything changed? cage or food any other pets? Shes not that old but when my old ham was ill he used to bite alot. So its possible she may be ill. Vet told me if they stop eating they are ill. Chech aer teeth if you can and for any lumps. Has she been dropped recently? If carries on Id get her checked out at a vets. Good luck

Em,

I'm not sure which question you we're referring to so I'm going to answer several.

She seems to be showing some signs of aging, but at 1.5 yrs, she's still on the younger side. She may benefit from a check up at the vets to rule out any possible problems. The excessive scratching may be from a mite, so she should have a skin scraping to rull that out or in. Treatment isn't too expensive if she has mites. We have 4- 18 month old ones too and one thats over 3 and they aren't behaving like that. The oldest has begun to get thin hair on the face, but he's very active. If he's greying any we can't tell since he's grey already. His childern who are all 18 months are less active, but this their norm. Females sometimes tend to be a bit more nippy to start with especially if in heat. But I can't explain her high flying act. We only had one that jumped from things, but he was a Russian dwarf. As far as the escaping goes, use a small lock one door and if the cage has tubes, tape them together so she can't get them apart. We have mice in a tank with a locking lid but it has discs in the top for where tubes would go (we don't use the tubes) and the male got out. We had to tape them shut to prevent it from happening again. Our females have bad chewing habbits when in heat and we gave each all types of things to chew on, but still they will do it.

They live 2-4 yrs. with 2 being more typical. This just doesn't sound like typical behavior for a Syrian especially if it has just begun recently. Talk with your vet, they may be able to advise you further on this. The crouching is what has me a bit worried since this is a behavior of pain. I've had several that in the days before passing away would crouch all the time, not just when holding them. Sadly we have lost over 30 hamsters (dwarf %26amp; Syrians) over the last 3 years, many of the dwarfs passed due to cancer. My computer buddy, a black male Syrian had to be put down after a 10 day long illness. He was one of the best hamsters I've ever cared for in having hamsters throughout 31 years of my life on %26amp; off.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of too much help and I hope Sally is alright.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

your hamster is old for its breed.the best thing to do is take out the height of your cage so if there are removable platforms take them out so she cant climb and drop.as hamster get older they become to look neglected and have thin hair.this is normal and you are doing nothing wrong.my kids hamster used to hoard more but not eat it so we had to keep throwing it away in case it got ill from sleeping on old food.expect your hamster to sleep more and more and become quite mean biting you if you disturb her.she cant help this i always told my kids maybe she ached like old people do so she was grumpy when you picked her up.they got round this by gently strokingher in her cage and she bit them less.the average life span of a syrian is 2 to 2 and a half but some can and do live longer.the same as people really we all live different length of time.see vet if you are still worried but they dont do a lot for small rodents

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

Please take her to the vet. It sounds as though she's had a stroke, honestly. Especially with the staying still and then running around.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

sorry to say but ur hampster should be passing soon. there is nothing you can do. just play with it. maybe get a new one. sorry =[

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

Aww BABY..... U HAVE TO LET TIME TAKE IT'S COURSE. SHE JUST MIGHT BE READY TO GO.

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

take her to the nearest vet if you want her to live shes not getting old she has a sickness called wet tail and it is a very fatal disease

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

sorry, but it's probably time... my hamster only lived for 1.5 years and i took care of her the best i could, just continue to care for her as you've always done, she's had a "brill" life and that's all that matters

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

shes gettin old it well take her time but 2 be safe go 2 the vet

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

all you can do now is love her till she goes sorry=(

My hamsters getting old and she's started to act really strangely...?

She is getting on in age but what you describe is disturbing. Take her to the vet. These are all signs of something wrong. Change in her drinking and activity level as well as activities are all signs of an illness or injury. Whatever is going on it sounds like it's driving her crazy. Thank you for being concerned for your pet and not thinking she is a disposable pet.
